In 1997 seven local churches set out on an adventure, with the goal to achieve, being a
safe place for youth to just go and hang out. Today our agency has met that goal.
From a "Boy Scouts of America" Venture Crew to a "Learning for life" Law
Enforcement Explorer Post, our county's youth have been given a chance to hang out all
they want. Above ground and below ground!
During its infancy our Venture Crew had itself confined to our facility getting trained
for the next adventurous idea they could come up with, the first mission being a ski
trip to Gatlinburg, Tenn. Once the first trip was taken the kids made it a goal and
tradition to go every year since that time. Now our youth plan out, design, map out, and
pre-plan trips to Red River Gorge climbing, the natural rock that this area is known around
the world for - to pushing the limits of subterranean exploration, known in our area as
"caving".
The many hundreds of caves our county has to offer sets no limits on how deep
they want to go during this challenging activity. Many of our agency's youth leaders
approach these adventures with great focus on getting educated and many hours of team
level training. Each leader picks an interest and works toward acquiring the needed
knowledge to prepare themselves for all possible scenarios they may encounter.
For example, some of the youth have completed the National Cave Rescue Commissions
cave rescue training, first aid/CPR training, rope rescue basics, and even techniques in
search and rescue procedures. The fact is that our youth train harder than most who also
have an interest in these fields. Their goals being to develop the needed skills to make
these activities safe and fun for all involved.
Our Law Enforcement Post is second to none when it comes to Adult leadership.
Officer Todd Stinson, an officer with the town of Corydon Police Department, works
hard to keep the interest of the youth focused. In the past, they have had the Floyd
County SWAT Team in to do informational demonstrations and the youth have been able
to work on the many different high angle rope techniques that officers sometimes find
themselves faced with.
Sgt. Matt Kitterman, who is also a Police officer with the Town of Corydon, works on classroom based programs involving traffic/criminal law to physical tactics. Through direct education and the many role models this program provides, our youth can have a realistic outlook on what their responsibilities as a law enforcement officer in the state of Indiana would be.
